Staring idly into space: Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You

A lot of strange things have come out of America over the years.  Pop tarts, George W Bush, the word ‘zucchini’,  half of me; the list goes on… But today in America is National Nothing Day, a day which is celebrated by doing nothing.  This sounds like a very interesting concept, and one we should try out here.  Let’s all spend the rest of the day doing absolutely nothing.  It’s Friday, you’ve earned the rest!

Here’s this week’s news:

  • We ran Social Enterprise Question Time this week, looking at ‘Social Investment, Friend or Foe?’.  It was a good evening, landing very much in the friend camp. You can read some of the best tweets from the evening here or watch the first 45 minutes of the evening here.  (They left me in charge of filming which means that the sound isn’t great and the memory card ran out halfway through the evening. Will have to leave the Oscar nomination for next year).

  • Filmed in a somewhat higher quality is the latest in our ‘Witness Session’ videos. This time June O’Sullivan of London Early Years Foundation talks us through Growing a Social Enterprise.   It’s a topic that we’re going to develop a workshop for, so keep an eye out for that later this year.

  • We’re very excited to this week announce ‘Mavericks’ in partnership with The Quest.  Taking place on the 26th February, it’s a one-day summit for LGBT leaders, entrepreneurs and pioneers.  The full programme will be announced soon (it looks set to be a cracker) but if you can’t wait you can pick up an early bird ticket here (at a discount).

  • A couple of our Fellows have job opportunities.  Intergen, run by the fantastic Norma Raynes, are looking for older people to become Co-ordinators in Tyldesley (near Wigan), Bow (London) and Barnet (London).  The organisation brings older and younger people together in neighbourhood schools to promote intergenerational learning, reduce isolation of elderly people and address underperformance in schools.  Full details are available here.

  • Martin Hogg is looking for a Project Co-ordinator for his organisation Citizen Coaching.  Based in central Birmingham, this is a fab opportunity to join a thriving social enterprise.  Martin would be a super boss too!  Further details on their website.

  • SSE Cornwall have still got spaces on their YSC Sustainable Leadership course, which is taking place at the Eden Project on 20th Feb and 27th March- you can even stay over in one of the brand new snooze pods at the project!

  • Do know a young person who has chosen to take a vocational route to their career, is motivated to work, and would benefit from some experience and skills to help them succeed?  Send them the way of social enterprise Renaisi, who are looking for people aged 16-24 to take part in their new Get Ahead programme.

  • If you are in London next Wednesday (21st) Mybnk are running ‘Business Bants’, an evening of food, wine and debate featuring some of the most exciting young entrepreneurs in the UK.  Register to attend here.

  • Yorkshire Bank have £75,000 on offer to charities and not for profit organisations across England as part of their ‘Spirit of the Community Awards‘.

  • It’s less than a month until our Replication and Social Franchising course.  We asked Kieron Tilley, a participant on last year’s course, what he thought of it.

And like that, we tripled our impact.  If you’d like to come on the course, we still have (a rapidly diminishing) number of places at £750, which is a £500 discount on last year’s course.  Book your place here.

Have a good week!
