Ahoy me hearties: Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You

Tall Ship

Between 1519 and 1522 Juan Sebastián Elcano skippered the Victoria on a 42,000 mile journey through treacherous, uncharted seas to become the first ship to successfully navigate the globe. It was an epic journey, with only 18 of the original 250 crew successfully completing the trip.

This afternoon I will myself undertaking a similar journey, sailing the vast 2.1 miles between Greenwich and the Thames Barrier. I say ‘sailing’ – I’ll be on a boat with sails but I won’t have anything to do with piloting it. In fact I plan on sitting in the sun and having a couple of beers. A good way to start the bank holiday weekend!

Hope you have a super weekend too, and here’s this week’s news:

Meet our witness Karen Lynch

A key part of our programmes are ‘Witness sessions’ when  students hear from inspirational speakers (witnesses) who have first-hand experience of the issues our students are facing. Like witnesses in a law court they give testimony about what it’s really like to start and grow social organisations. Our Witnesses are some of the most inspirational entrepreneurs around who take time out of their very busy lives to help our social entrepreneurs.  We’d like you to meet them and be inspired!

Meet: Karen Lynch, CEO Belu Water

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss: Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You

Apple on desk

Why that subject line? Because I’ve got a new boss! Although she isn’t the same as my old boss who was (and still is as far as I know) a he.  It was just a good opportunity to use a lyric from a Who song. Anyway, I’ve been on my best behaviour all week. Remember all those old Have I Got Social Enterprise News For Yous making fun of the management at SSE? Didn’t happen. The one where I may have been a little hungover? Wasn’t me. The one with the swearing? I was hacked.

On with this week’s news, as well as some obvious/terrible/ridiculous pointers from a list I found online about how to impress a new boss, should you find yourself in a similar situation…

The One From The East Coast Of America: Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You

USA flag

Hello from the USA! USA! USA!

How’s it all going that side of the pond? This week’s Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You is a little bit different, as I’m on ‘vacation’ and haven’t been paying attention to much of what’s been going on in the world of social enterprise (shocking, I know).

So, I’m going to nick a format that the tv show Friends used to use once a series and look back at some of the most popular links of the year so far. They tend to be more ‘how to’ style articles than the news which I’ve filtered out as it’s often no longer news.

Have a great weekend and normal service will resume next week – i’m off into Boston now followed by a baseball game tomorrow!

The end of an era? Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You

Danger

This could be the last ever Have I Got Social Enterprise News For You. No, I’ve not been fired (yet) but I am about to go on my first ever holiday with my in-laws and god knows if I’ll make it back from that unscathed. If you don’t hear from me within two weeks then send help, I could well be involved in a major diplomatic incident. Ringing around my head are the words my mum used to shout after me whenever I used to go round to a friend’s house after school: “Just make sure you offer to clear up”.

Enjoy your weekend!
