An opportunity to support Vandanamu

by SSE Fellow Abhi Arumbakkam

Everyday from 6 to 10 am, then from 2 to 4 pm, again from 6 to 7 pm and from there on for one hour at an hour’s interval all through the night, there is no power in the small village of Periyamudaliyar Chavadi in rural Southern India. It is the village where our small sewing unit is located…

At Vandanamu, we source wholesale orders for cotton bags from discerning customers in the UK and have them produced at our sewing unit. But we are unable to take on larger orders or turn around orders quick enough because of this crippling power shortage. This makes sustaining our unit very difficult and has a knock on effect on our efforts to provide livelihoods for this group of long-marginalised women.

We are now attempting to crowdfund installation of solar panels at our unit which will ensure uninterrupted power supply. Please watch this 3-minute video which encapsulates what we are attempting to do. More information about our campaign may be found here.

We are 99% Smiles, 1% Sweat, 100% Cotton.
