New programme to support South London health and wellbeing organisations

15 Apr 2019

We’re delighted to announce a new development programme we’re running with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity. The Health and Wellbeing Trade Up Programme will help social entrepreneurs tackle some of the biggest health challenges of our time.

The programme will support 15 people running established social enterprises, charities and community projects in Southwark and Lambeth. We are looking to find projects that are addressing childhood obesity or that are helping to slow the progression from one long-term condition to many, in working-age adults.

We’ll be helping these social entrepreneurs to grow their impact by increasing their income from trading. We’ll also support them to develop their leadership skills and support networks.

We’ll support them for a year, with:

  • a comprehensive learning programme (12 days, spread over a year)
  • a network of sector peers
  • a Match Trading™ grant of up to £10,000

This is an exciting partnership for us at SSE. It’s the first time we’re working with a health foundation to offer social entrepreneurs Match Trading™ grants, to tackle complex health challenges that are prevalent in a specific geographic community. We strive to back people with ideas for improving their local communities, because we believe they have the understanding and commitment to make change stick.

Match Trading is an innovation in grant-funding created by SSE. A Match Trading grant pound-for-pound matches an increase in income from trading. By rewarding sales growth, Match Trading incentivises social organisations to develop their trading base, so they can build stronger futures. Pilots of Match Trading grants have seen social organisations typically increase their income from trading by more than 90% in one year, with the support of an SSE learning programme.

We’ll open applications for the Health and Wellbeing Trade Up Programme in May 2019.
