Value wellbeing change
Put a simple £ value on changes in individual wellbeing, from the person’s perspective.

Estimate potential savings to the state created by the outcomes you support.
Decide when a light-touch approach works, and when you need deeper analysis for credibility.
Identify free sources of valuations and practical shortcuts to get started quickly.
Measuring social value helps you show funders and investors the difference you make – and how much difference you create.
On this short, practical course you’ll learn two linked ways to value outcomes: changes in individual wellbeing (from the person’s perspective) and the wider ‘knock-on’ effects that can create savings for the state. Through examples and exercises, you’ll compare these approaches and see how using them together can tell a fuller story of your impact. You’ll also pick up tips, shortcuts and simple calculations to start valuing outcomes, and explore the risks of over-simplifying when more rigour is needed.
The course was developed by Tim Goodspeed, a founder member of Social Value UK and Social Value International and co-author of the Guide to Social Return on Investment (SROI).
• What social value is and why it matters
• Engaging stakeholders when measuring social value
• Free sources of valuations
• Basics of cost benefit analysis and social return on investment (SROI)

• Value changes in individual wellbeing from participants’ perspectives

This course is for anyone keen to learn how to measure social value – no prior knowledge needed. It’s particularly useful if you need to evidence value for funders or investors, or want a practical introduction to valuing outcomes. You can take it as a stand-alone introduction, or alongside our Measuring Social Impact workshop if you want to complete all stages of an SROI.
Tim Goodspeed is a pioneer in social impact and social value, and a founding member of Social Value International. With a background in economic development, funding and programme management, he has over 20 years’ experience supporting social enterprises. Tim co-authored the Guide to SROI and was among the first accredited SROI practitioners and trainers. He delivers training that balances funder requirements with a strong focus on stakeholder value and ethical practice, and continues to advise organisations on measuring and maximising the value they create.

At the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE), we back people with purpose. With practical learning that makes sense in the real world. With funding that grows as you grow. With mentors, peers and people who’ve been there and done it. We don’t care where you started. We care about where you’re going and the difference you want to make in your life, in your community, and in the world.
