About the workshop

Being able to measure social impact can make you more attractive to funders and help you understand what’s working, benchmark your progress and spot where to improve.

In this jam-packed three-session course (run over three consecutive mornings), you’ll learn the foundations of impact measurement and social value. We’ll explore outcomes, stakeholder engagement and wellbeing measures, then build a Theory of Change for a project. You’ll also be introduced to Social Return on Investment (SROI) and other tools, with case studies and practical exercises you can tailor to your work. By the end, you’ll leave with an impact map and a measurement action plan you can use straight away. The course is based on one originally developed by NEF Consulting (New Economics Foundation).

  • what social impact is, and why we measure it

  • how to engage stakeholders in your evaluation

  • how to define and test outcomes

  • approaches to measuring wellbeing

  • how to develop a Theory of Change

  • an introduction to Social Return on Investment (SROI)

  • common tools, resources and good practice examples

  • explain the business case and social imperative for measuring impact

  • choose the right depth and frequency of evaluation for a project

  • select practical but rigorous data sources

  • justify sample sizes and involve stakeholders appropriately

  • use concepts like attribution, deadweight and drop-off

Delivered live online via Zoom, this course blends clear teaching with case studies, group coaching, peer learning and practical exercises. You’ll work through examples, discuss ethical practice and funder expectations, and apply the tools to your own project. There’s plenty of space for questions across all three sessions.

You’ll be introduced to social impact measurement tools and frameworks, including Theory of Change, impact mapping and SROI concepts. We’ll share best practice case studies and examples, plus resources you can use to plan your evaluation, gather evidence and report impact clearly.

An online resources pack is provided for each course with further reading and sources and examples for everything mentioned on the course.

The course runs over three consecutive days, 9.30am–12.30pm each day (including breaks).

Across the sessions we’ll cover: what social impact is and how to engage stakeholders; defining outcomes, measuring wellbeing and building a Theory of Change; and introducing SROI, social valuation and measurement planning. You’ll finish with an impact map and an action plan tailored to your project.

Anyone keen to learn how and why to measure social impact. No prior knowledge is required. Previous participants have included charity development officers, chief executives, project and evaluation leads, housing and community involvement managers, CSR managers and change managers.
