Witness session: Growing a social enterprise

June O’Sullivan, CEO of London Early Years Foundation, reflects on how she expanded her social enterprise while protecting the culture, warmth, and sense of community that staff valued. As her organisation prepared to open new nurseries, reactions were mixed: some team members were excited about new opportunities for progression, while others worried that growth would dilute the family feel they cherished.

June describes how she and her leadership team addressed these concerns through open, honest communication. They held informal “tea sessions” across nurseries, inviting staff to ask questions, share anxieties, and discuss what growth would mean in practice. These conversations helped staff understand the purpose behind expansion—creating more nursery places for children who need them—and reassured them that the organisation’s values would remain at the centre.

Her message is clear: growth should be mission‑driven, not about building an empire, and staff must feel connected to the vision if an organisation is to scale successfully.
