New Entrant Scheme Pilot Projects

New entrant scheme pilot project

Applications are now open!

The New Entrant Scheme Pilot Projects are a set of programmes that we are running with Defra. Defra wants to better support those who want to enter farming and develop land-based businesses. They are planning to introduce a scheme for new entrants next year.

There are 2 separate pilots:

  1. Start up : People wanting to work in agriculture/land management
  2. Scale up : People working for/running land based businesses

The schemes are being run for people in 2 different areas of the country:

  1. Rural areas of South West England
  2. Peri-urban areas in West Yorkshire

The deadline for applications is 11.59pm on Sunday 18 December 2022.

Key benefits

  • Explore new ways of farming and land management
  • Get support with accessing finance and diversify income streams
  • Introduction to collaborative working and gain peer group business influence
  • Gain environmental innovation and create eco hubs in the local region

The Start Up programme will work with people who have experience in working in farming or land-based business and now want to develop their own land-based business.

The Scale Up programme will work with leaders and owners of land-based businesses that are under 10 years old, who want to grow their business to the next level, for example, develop new products and markets, enhance their environmental impact and develop their leadership skills.

Our programmes are based on peer and action learning. We’re definitely not about textbooks and teachers. Instead, we help you to get the headspace you need to map out next steps, with the support of peers facing similar challenges. The programme will be working with the following partners: Duchy College and Bicton College, Eden Project, Newquay Orchard, YOR Green CIC, landlord and land agent partners and finance and marketing experts.
